3/08: I recently acquired an old manual-focus, non-metering macro lens. I've been wanting to try my hand at macro, esp abstract macro. Here are my first attempts... Note: the EXIF doesn't register my focal length and aperture with this old lens. Sorry about that. UPDATE 1/09 I have a new 105mm Nikon macro which does everything, but I still like to use the old lenses at times!

Wandering the beach at Chincoteague Wildlife Refuge, Virginia...after spending time trying to hone my wildlife photography skills...remembering my true love in photography is in the abstract, especially as found in natural forms. The sand gave me much to work with. Nov. 11, 2007. (Yes, wildlife shots to come... Including the wild horses that live there!) Hope you enjoy these for now.

Northern NJ had an ice storm that transformed the world for a day or so. I've never seen ice coating *everything* so thickly and perfectly. I wish I could say no trees were harmed, but many were bent and broken from the weight. I hope to show the magical and wonderful side of this phenomenon.

I had just read an article in Outdoor Photographer about being a "photo rebel" (which I suspect I am anyway) - and one of the rules it said to break was to not shoot into the sun. I was thinking about that as I shot most of these cherry blossom shots in front of the setting sun...and am happy with how things turned out.

I was sitting in my backyard today reading Freeman Patterson's "Photography and the Art of Seeing" when the grass caught my eye. In honor of the book (and because I have nature A.D.D.) , I let myself be distracted from my reading and crawled around the lawn with my camera. I'm sure my neighbors wondered what I was up to, but somehow I think Patterson would approve. Here's a sampling of what I saw. (Great book, by the way!)

It's a huge and lovely old Southern farm property which now houses a center for continuing education and retreats - as well as an organic farm. I go there each year for a dance event. This year I took time away from the usual dancing to explore and play with my camera there.

4/08 Spent 2 days in St. Augustine, Florida in my recent trip to the Southeast. One highlight was a visit to the Alligator Farm, where hundreds if not thousands of wild birds nest because they feel safe from predators. It's a great place to work on bird photography skills! I also enjoyed walking the beach in St. Augustine in the early morning and visiting Washington Oaks Park south of town with its incredible Live Oak trees.

Here are 6 images from my visit to Upper Antelope Canyon in Arizona last April. I had a really hard time shooting there - no slr camera at the time, lens trouble, a guide who kept pushing me along, and a lack of knowledge about how best to photograph this challenging but amazingly beautiful place. I hadn't really planned to go there, but managed to squeeze a visit in right before my flight back from Utah. I wasn't so happy with my photos when I got home, so I never posted them to Flickr...but now looking at them again, I think I found something salvageable! Hopefully, another trip back there will in my future.

This is a sampling of the hundreds of photos I took on a 12 day hiking trip in Iceland over the summer. If you would like to read my travelogue and see more photos, visit web.mac.com/jddances/iWeb/Iceland/Home.html I have to credit Iceland for getting me into photography. I was blown away by all the natural beauty of the place. I went with a little totally automatic point and shoot but it still allowed me to see and capture a bit of the magic. I long to go back with a DSLR and wide angle lens! Anyway, after that trip, I upgraded my camera, joined flickr, upgraded again, and have just become really tuned into *seeing*. (Thank you to those who had commented on this set. I had deleted this set after the weird Flickr bug of Feb. 2007 that made another person's (inappropriate) photo show up on my thumbnail for this. I'm sorry to have lost your comments in the process.)

Seven local Flickr folks braved a chilly winter day to explore a coastal National Recreation Area called Sandy Hook. It is a hook-shaped spit that curves into the ocean and encloses Raritan Bay. In addition to having varied and interesting natural areas, Sandy Hook has the ruins of Fort Hancock (including supposedly unexploded ordnances.) Well, we took our chances and had a great time! Here are a few pictures from the day.
