The focus of rvision is to provide a better, re-visioned interface for viewing Flickr. It originally began as a The Big Picture, WSJ Photo Journal, or Danny Choo like photo blog experience (i.e. big pictures and commentary all on one page). However, I quickly realized that my personal photography style (i.e. taking and posting a lot) was not very conducive to that format. Thus rvision transitioned into becoming a more versatile Flickr interface by drawing inspiration in the following ways:
- The photo layout scheme from Compfight, a wonderful Flickr image search tool.
- The photo overlays from Flexplore, a great tool for discovering personally recommended Flickr photos.
- The lightboxes from Flickr itself, which makes you jump through 3 links just to view the large or original and, for the most part, presents you with a lot of stuff you don't care about.
The rest of the site is my own original design. The result of all this is that you can still get the big picture format if you want, but you can also skim through larger photo sets with ease. If you don't find what you're looking for in rvision, then perhaps you might want to check out some other excellent alternatives, such as Fluidr or Flickriver.
rvision was created by Randy Pang (rvision) over at Daydream Labs. It was built using Ruby on Rails, jQuery, Haml, Sass, Firebug, Git, TextMate, and of course, the Flickr API, which I access using Flickraw. The photo overlays are currently implemented using Ferret Army's jQuery plugin, while the lightboxes are implemented via Fancybox. It's currently deployed on Dreamhost shared hosting using Capistrano and Phusion Passenger.
